To extend life for cancer survivors, eating ‘everything in moderation’ might be the best approach, suggests a new study.

A growing body of evidence is suggesting that diets influence the outlook of cancer survivors.

For instance, a recent study has suggested that a low-fat diet may significantly improve the outlook of breast cancer survivors.

And, a meta-analysis of existing studies refers to the Western diet as “detrimental” for those who were diagnosed with breast cancer.

But a lot of these studies focus on certain foods that should be avoided or consumed by people who have had specific forms of cancer, whereas the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, for example, emphasize the importance of a high-quality “total diet” for optimal health in the general population.

So, researchers led by Kalyani Sonawane, Ph.D., an assistant professor at the University of Florida’s College of Public Health and Health Professions in Gainesville, set out to investigate the benefits of an overall healthful diet for cancer survivors.

Sonawane explains the motivation for the research, saying, “While dietary guidelines for the general public have moved toward a total diet approach, such an approach has not been extensively studied among cancer survivors.”

Who has never dreamt of taking control of its environment without using the hands, just thinking? And if these assumptions looking like science fiction are turning to reality thanks to neurotechnologies!

For a long time, neurosciences were an exclusive domain of healthcare, and technologies associated were serving two main applications: neurostimulation and neurosensing. In early 2000’s the concept of Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) emerged with the strong objective to use brain and peripheral nerve information to the benefit of patients.

More recently, BCI got the objective not only to serve the medical sector but to exploit brain signal for a broad range of applications in industrial, military and consumer fields. This has surely caught the attention of ambitious people like Elon Musk who founded Neuralink in this domain in 2017 or Bryan Johnson who invested $100M in his company Kernel. Web giants, with companies such as Google, Facebook and Microsoft are also watching these new technologies carefully.

Facebook is strongly involved in a project of “typing-by-brain” as a silent speech interface, while Microsoft is publishing patents on “mind control” that allows users to operate apps using their mind without gesture. The conjunction of neurosciences, advanced microtechnologies and rapid adoption of wearables lead to the emergence of innovative start-up companies and number of initiatives supported by public or private organizations.

In the last 3 to 4 years, a wave of fundraising reached a cumulative $300M in BCI companies accompanied by national initiatives like the Obama’s Brain Initiative project supported by US government inspired by the success of the Human Genome Project. If we take the model of the DNA sequencing history, given that researchers are going faster today thanks to computer science, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the discovery of a groundbreaking technology to record brain signals before 2030.

This report is covering the 3 main segments of neurotechnologies (neurostimulation, neurosensing, and BCI), the dynamic of the market through fundraisings, merger & acquisition as well as comprehensive roadmaps of product developments.

An innovative acoustic belt that was initially designed to listen to the sounds of termites eating might help doctors to diagnose irritable bowel syndrome more easily.

The sounds produced by the gut may help to diagnose IBS.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common gut disorder, affecting 10–20 percent of the population.

Characterized by abdominal discomfort or pain, constipation, diarrhea, and bloating, the exact causes of IBS are difficult to pin down.

Diagnosis is equally tricky, and, currently, there are no reliable tests. Doctors can only rule out other conditions.

For instance, blood analysis may be used to identify celiac disease or another condition that might explain the symptoms, and stool samples can rule out inflammatory bowel disorder or infections.

Another option is a colonoscopy, which allows doctors to visually inspect the bowel, but it is an invasive procedure that can be painful.

Because of these difficulties, IBS often goes undiagnosed, and people do not receive treatment that could potentially relieve their symptoms.
